Greenlash International hybrid seminar on Environmental Disasters and Policy Aspects
The School of Environmental Sciences and the School of Social Sciences at Loyola College recently hosted a webinar series on environmental disasters and policy aspects, featuring distinguished speakers Prof. Johny Augustine (St. Amha University) and Prof. Ilan Kelman (University College London & University of Agder, Norway). The event brought together participants from across the globe, including Egypt, Sri Lanka, and the United Kingdom, to discuss pressing issues of environmental injustice, capitalism, disaster prevention, and resilience.
Prof. Johny’s presentation explored the social and environmental impacts of capitalism, with a focus on:
Wealth inequality, citing stark contrasts between billionaires’ fortunes and millions living without basic needs.
Energy consumption disparities between the Global North and South, where high consumption in the North is tied to consumerism, while the South struggles with access to electricity.
Resource exploitation, past and present, through colonial extraction, unfair labor practices, and corporate dominance in manufacturing, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals.
The need for alternative economic systems—such as social solidarity economies—that prioritize cooperation, sustainability, and human well-being.
Prof. Ilan Kelman delivered a keynote on “Disaster by Choice”, stressing that disasters are not natural events, but the outcome of human decisions. Using examples from Japan, California, and Iran, he highlighted that while earthquakes and floods are inevitable, their devastating impacts can be prevented with better planning, infrastructure, and preparedness.
Key themes from his address included:
Vulnerability as the root of disasters—poverty, lack of resources, and political oppression shape communities’ ability to cope.
Prevention strategies such as turning floodplains into green spaces, adopting people-centric planning, and investing in education and infrastructure.
Expanding the scope of disaster definitions to include wildlife and ecosystems, with examples such as New Zealand’s legal recognition of rivers.
Advocacy challenges, as governments are often reluctant to invest in prevention due to limited quantifiable outcomes, despite long-term ethical and economic benefits.
The session also addressed plastic reduction, disaster preparedness, and the role of local knowledge. While recycling is important, Ilan emphasized that reducing and reusing plastics are more impactful. Discussions highlighted both the strengths and limitations of traditional solutions, advocating for collaboration between local communities, governments, and international organizations.
The webinar concluded with an engaging discussion on how collective choices, policy shifts, and grassroots participation can drive meaningful change in addressing both environmental injustice and disaster prevention.
